| Description: | Vila Velha is the bigger and ancienter municipality of Espírito Santo state, Brasil. It was founded with the name of Espírito Santo villa by the portuguese Vasco Fernandes Coutinho, donnee of the Espírito Santo captaincy, who has arrived at its port on 23rd May, in 1535. It was the seat of the captaincy until 1549, when it was transfered to Vitoria and the municipality has stayed with its present name. It is localized at a latitude of 20º21'1.08 south and a longitude of 40º17'19.32 west. It has an area of 209 km2. Its population is about 405 thousand people (in 2007), which the majority lives in the urban area. It is 5km away from the state's capital. Its littoral has 32 km, all bordered by beaches, with the most beautiful scenarios of Espírito Santo, where are placed some of the most wonderfull beaches of Brasil, like Itapoã, Praia da Costa and Itaparica. |
