Name: Madeira Island
Description: Madeira Island, situated on the Atlantic Pearl, is a true paradise for the plunge lovers. The great possibility to see species like dolphins, rays and eventually mantles, favours the practice of plunge, which has gained more importance for the lovers of this sport. From shipwrecks and caves to natural reserves, Madeira island has several places to plunge, namely the Natural Reserve from Garajau and Baixa da Cruz. Selvagens Islands are constituted by Selvagem Grande and Selvagem Pequena islands and are localized about 180 miles from Madeira islands; they have a Natural Reserve, on which inhabit some rare floral species, being considered as well an "ornithological sanctuary", due to the nesting of marine On the Natural Reserve of Desertas islands, placed about 22 miles at south-east from Funchal city, we can find the last atlantic refuge for the Monje seal, also known as sea-wolf, the rarest seal in the world. We also can find this marine species on the Rocky Natural Reserve of Navio, in Santana. On the extreme east of the island it is localized the Natural Reserve of Ponta de São Lourenço, which has a peculiar fauna and flora. On the Natural Reserve of Garajau, which is the unique reserve on Portugal that is exclusively maritime, we can observe great dimensioned fishes, like the black grouper "Pintas" and the recent "Malhado". These main species and the fact of the diver's access can be donne by land, are some of the main reasons that mark and evidence the difference and makes a wonderful plunge for all the plunge lovers. Cigar-fish, serranidaes, boce, sergeant majors, green-fish, rays are other species that the divers can find when plunging on the crystalline waters of the Madeira island.

Water Temperature: The temperature of sea water varies between 26ºC in summer and 17ºC in winter.
Diving Suit: In winter semi-dry suit and in the summer wet suit with shorts.
Visibility under water: Water visibility is good, ranging from 6 meters to 32 meters
Climate: Its pleasant climate along the year, its crystalline waters with temperatures around 18ºC on Winter and 22ºC on Summer.
How to get there: There are two ways of transport to get to the island: by boat or airplane. By boat there weekly frequencies flights to Portimão and the Canary Islands. By air there are regular flights to mainland Portugal and European cities.
When to go: July   September   October  
Other Activities: The island is very mountainous providing magnificent walks through valleys and mountains, with the highest points of the Pico Ruivo, Pico das Torres and Pico Arieiro. You can also visit a number of diverse gardens and forest parks. You on the island of Madeira Laurissilva Forest which was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1999.
