Name:
Peniche
Description:
Talking about Peniche implies that we have to recourse to its history and its ancient shipwrecks, on which the subaquatic archaeology has dedicate much of its attention. The grand Carvoeiro cape, with its watchful lighthouse, guards all of its histories and give them permanence with more present shipwrecks, being a source of attraction for many divers. Talking about Peniche means also talking about its protected area, the Natural Reserve of Berlenga, on which are included Berlenga, Estelas, Farilhões and some others like Rinchão, forming a small archipelago of a rare and beautiful landscape, unique on the country, a true submersed treasure where the good visibility prevails practically along the whole year, reaching 30 meters on Winter, when the water is colder. All the reserve area is good to plunge, depending on the atmospheric conditions, but on the east coast of Berlenga Grande, from Carreiro do Mosteiro until Cabeça do Elefante and in Cova do Sono it is not; on the south coast are made more pleasant plunges. At north-east, the shipwreck Vapor do Trigo is one of the attractive points, as well as the shipwreck Primavera, almost in front of the landing-place. On the exposed coast to the north winds, we can not always find good conditions to plunge, so the Maldito islet and Carreiro dos Cações stand waiting for the good weather.
Peniche has a diversity of tourism resources which includes a rich and varied cuisine, handicrafts diverse marked by the famous bobbin lace, magnificent beaches exist throughout the coast, ideal for water sports and a huge cultural heritage, marked by the fortifications and religious monuments.
