Name: Lautém
Description: East Timor offers the adventurous diver the opportunity to explore the unexplored. The diving is world class with kilometres of majestic walls, that drop off into the deep blue sea, acres of untouched reefs, and an abundance of prolific marine life. The best time of the year for diving is February to June and September to December. Lautém (Tetum: Lautein) is one of the districts of East Timor, on the eastern end of the island of Timor. It has a population of 57,453 (census 2004) and an area of 1,702 km2. Its capital is Lospalos, which lies 248 km east of the national capital, Dili. The subdistricts are Iliomar, Lautém, Lospalos, Luro, and Tutuala. To the west the district borders the districts of Baucau and Viqueque. To the north lies the Banda Sea, and to the south the Timor Sea. The district also includes the easternmost point of the island, Kap Cutcha in the subdistrict of Tutuala, and the small island Jaco. The district of Lautém is identical to what was the council of the same name in Portuguese Timor. At that time, many of the localities had Portuguese names, such as Vila Nova de Malaca (today Lautém), Nova Nazaré (Com), Nova Sagres (Tutuala), Nova Âncora (Laivai) and Silvícola (Loré). Lautém has beautiful sand beaches and a wild, mountainous, and raw rugged unspoilt landscape. Many of the endemic birds of East Timor live here. Near the city of Lautém there are cave drawings. Numerous stone sarcophagi and animistic shrines are found throughout the district.
Water Temperature: Water temperature between 21ºC and 25ºC.
Diving Suit: Complete wet suit or wet suit with shorts.
Visibility under water: Visibility can reach up to 40 meters.
Climate: The climate is hot and humid, with average temperature ranging from 19ºC and 30ºC. The dry season is between May and September and the rainy season usually occurs between the months of October and April.
How to get there: The only means of transport to go to Dili is the plane, with several flights a day. Then take a bus to Lautém
When to go: May   June   September   October   November  
Other Activities: Apart from diving, visitors can go hiking, mountaineering, watching whales and also bird watching.
