| Common Name: | Paired-bell Siphonophore |
|---|---|
| Description: | Under a small float of gas are a series of pairs of swimming bells. Under these bells is a rigid structure (siphosoma) that appears to be built by angle brackets after which may extend numerous tentacles (usually in a spiral pattern) to feed (rotation of water through the relaxation of the tentacles in the form of a large rotating spiral). The identification is made by observation of the annexes in the form of point (tentilla) found in the tentacles. Toxic in contact with the tentacles causes a short, but intense sting. |
| Habitat: | Floats in the open sea at depths up to 40m. |
| Color: | Transparent to translucent color. |
| Dimensions: | The tentacles can be up to 30 inches in length. |
| Geographical Distribution: | Caribbean Sea Western Central Atlantic |
