Common Name: High cockscomb
Description: The dorsal fin has 55-58 thorns and anal fin is composed of 39 to 40 soft rays. Caudal fin with convex outer margin
Habitat: Demersal. Usually found under rocks in intertidal areas. Inhabits depths between 1 and 30 meters.
Color: Variable colour, can be light gray, dark olive-green, brown or dark brown, with or without reddish or purple tones. Females are less varied in color, but are generally gray-green background color with brownish reticulated patterns or background color with dark brown reticulated pattern. Belly pale. Gray bar at the base of the caudal peduncle. During breeding, the male develops orange anal and pectoral fin, and reddish dorsal fin and tail.
Dimensions: Up to 20 inches in total length.
